The Challenge: Creating an Engaging, Playful Gateway for All Ages Around a Iconic Exhibition Tree
As part of its major “Love Muskoka Sustain Muskoka” exhibition, the Muskoka Discovery Centre wanted to spark wonder in visitors of all ages—from young children to adults—while showcasing a majestic, centerpiece tree within the gallery. The goal was to transform the floor surrounding the tree into a dynamic, playful ecosystem that conveys the beauty and seasonal transitions of the Muskoka environment in an intuitive, hands-free way.
The Simbioz Solution: A Seamless Four-Seasons Interactive Floor Experience
Simbioz designed and deployed an autonomous interactive floor projection that seamlessly loops through a 2-minute animation of Muskoka’s four distinct seasons. Powered by custom TouchDesigner software and advanced Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera sensing, the floor detects visitor movement in real time and triggers responsive visual effects underfoot—such as a trail of blooming flowers appearing beneath their steps in summer or interactive leaves they can kick and push across the floor in autumn.
To deliver a flawless turnkey installation, Simbioz handled the complete production pipeline: from video animation and motion graphic design to custom software development, hardware procurement (PC, projector, ToF optical sensors), mounting, and final on-site calibration.
The Results: An Unforgettable Interactive Feature That Blends Play and Environmental Learning
The interactive floor projection serves as a vibrant, high-traffic attraction within the exhibition. By encouraging physical exploration and active play around the exhibition tree, the installation entertains children, delights families, and offers an engaging, memorable celebration of Muskoka’s natural heritage.
